Pre-Treatment Instructions – Toxin and Filler

Your injectable treatment is coming up and we have some important pre-treatment instructions for you. Please review the following.

  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising). This is particularly important for dermal filler injections.
  • Please ensure you do not have a dental appointment or vaccine within 2 weeks before or after your dermal filler appointment.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications, if possible, for a period of 2 weeks or at least 4-5 days before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections. This is particularly important for dermal filler injections.
  • Schedule your Dermal Filler and Botox appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. Results from the Botox injections will take approximately 4 to 7 days to appear. Dermal filler injections may cause some bruising and swelling that can take several days to resolve.
  • Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore or blemish on the area.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, please let your provider know, they may put you on an anti-viral medication prior to treatment.
  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of light-headedness during your treatment.
  • You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Post-Treatment Instructions for Toxin Treatment

Botulinum Toxin Type A Post Treatment Instructions

Try to exercise your treated muscles for the first 30 minutes after treatment (e.g., practice frowning, raising your eyebrows or squinting). This helps to work Botulinum Toxin Type A into your muscles. Although this is thought to help, it will NOT impact your treatment negatively if you forget to do this.

Do NOT rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours after your treatment.

Do NOT do strenuous exercise for 4 hours after treatment. Also avoid facials or saunas for 4 hours after your treatment. This will minimize the risk of raising your blood pressure and therefore minimize the risk of temporary bruising.

Feel free to shower and go about most other regular daily activities.

Do NOT lie down for 4 hours after treatment. This is to avoid the risk of pressure on the treated areas (from your pillow) and to avoid the risk of having the area rubbed accidentally.

Be assured that any tiny bumps or marks will go away within a few hours after your treatment. If you need to apply make-up within 4 hours after your treatment, only use a GENTLE touch to avoid rubbing the treated area.

Results of your treatment can take up to 14 days to take full effect. Please wait until the 14 days has passed before assessing your treatment results.

Because Botulinum Toxin Type A requires a special technique to customize the injections to your individual muscular structure, it is important that your muscle activity recovers BUT that your skin is not creasing to the point from where you started.

Pre-Treatment Instructions – Radiesse

TWO WEEKS BEFORE INJECTIONS

Foods and Medications to Avoid. Two weeks before your appointment try to avoid nuts, seeds,
fish oil, NSAIDs, supplements, and anything that prolongs bleeding. This will significantly help minimize bruising bleeding and swelling.

Medications and Supplements. Talk to your primary care doctor or physician specialist. If you are on blood thinners, you may need to stop these a few days to weeks prior to your treatment. Speak to your prescribing physician regarding safety of stopping and restarting these medications. We do not recommend patients that are on life saving medications stop their medications in order to have any cosmetic procedures performed.

DAY OF INJECTIONS

Eat and drink before your treatment. It is not uncommon for patients to get lightheaded during their injection. Having a good blood sugar and being hydrated will make it less likely that you will feel queasy during your treatment.

Post-Treatment Instructions - Radiesse

Immediately after treatment there may be a slight redness, mild swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation or bruising in the treated area. It is normal to feel ‘firmness’ in the treated area for the first few days; over time the area will soften.

This is a normal result of the injection and generally disappears in a few days. If symptoms persist or other reactions occur please contact your injector.

COOL
• Apply a cool compress for 10 minutes every hour on the day of treatment
(do not apply ice directly on your skin).
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
• Do not expose the area to intense heat (e.g. solarium or sauna).

CALM
• If palpable nodules should form, you can massage the affected areas to distribute the material
• Avoid pressure on treated areas for the first few nights (i.e. sleep on back if possible).
• Pain relief such as Panadol may be taken if needed to maintain comfort.
• To reduce any bruising, you may wish to apply a topical treatment such as Arnica or Hirudoid cream.

CLEAR
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
• Avoid make-up for at least 12 hours
• Do not use AHA, Retinols/Vitamin C therapy or oil-based make-up for the first 24 hours.
• Avoid facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, IPL or energy-based treatments and microdermabrasion for two weeks after treatment. Please check with your injector before undergoing other facial treatments within this time.
• Do not massage the treated area (unless instructed by your injector).
• There is a small chance that a treatment may induce an outbreak of facial cold sores in patients with previous history of cold sores.

As with all injectable filler treatments there is a very small potential for vascular (blood) flow issues. Signs of this may be changes in skin colour, blanching and/or mottled appearance, pimples, blistering or pain. It must be noted that this can occur either at the injection site or anywhere away from the treated area.

If you notice any changes please call the clinic or seek medical advice as soon as possible.

Radiesse – Treatments Expectations

• Injectable implant products are long lasting but not permanent.

• Clinical trials and practitioner experience demonstrate that the duration of HA gel increases the more frequently you repeat your treatment.

• Most patients choose to have follow-up treatments 6-12 months after an initial treatment.

• Further treatment within 2 to 4 weeks after the initial treatment with HA gel may be necessary to achieve an optimal correction.

After a treatment with hydrating HA gel, it is recommended to repeat the treatment plan every 4-6 months. Results and patient preferences may vary.

Post-Treatment Instructions – Sculptra

  • Please massage the treated area for five minutes five times a day for five days after treatment.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 24-48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising.

  • NEVER apply ice directly to skin and avoid firm pressure.

  • Swelling may not always be even from side to side depending on pre-existing asymmetries, volume of Sculptra® injected and bleeding at each injectionsite. Initial swelling takes 2 weeks to settle. Swellingwillbeworsethefirst24-48hours.Asymmetryis usually related to swelling and volume of Sculptra® injected. Any asymmetries with collagen production will not be evident for 4-6 weeks.
  • Papules (lumps and bumps). Thefeeling of tiny subcutaneousbumps thatareusuallynot visible butcan be felt when pressing on the skin. Theyarenormal andwill resolvewith time. Visible nodules with redness or potential color changes to the skin should be reported to your physician.
  • Hemosiderin staining (brown stain on skin) occurs when red blood cells are broken down, causing hemoglobin to be stored as hemosiderin. This can occur with any injection and the discoloration is usually transient and disappears in a couple of weeks; however, in some people, the stain ends up being permanent.
  • Initial Subtle Results. Sculptra® results will become evident at 4-6weeks after injection treatment since they rely on the body’s own production of collagen. Any initial post treatment volume gains are most likely due to the Sculptra® solution as well as swelling. Anywherefrom1-3 treatment sessions maybe recommended in order to achieve the final results. Your provider will always be conservative with your initial treatment and reassess need for more Sculptra® at your follow-up visit.
  • One of the risks with using this product is unintentional injection into a blood vessel. The chances of this happening are very small, but if it does happen, the complications can be serious, and may be permanent. These complications, which have been reported for facial injections, can include vision abnormalities, blindness, stroke, temporary scabs, or permanent scarring of the skin. If you have changes in your vision, signs of a stroke (including sudden difficulty speaking, numbness or weakness in your face, arms, or legs, difficulty walking, face drooping, severe headache, or dizziness) white appearance of the skin, unusual pain during or shortly after treatment, you should notify us immediately.

  • There can be some redness, stinging and burning within 15 minutes to 2 hours after treatment and later swelling and bruising which peaks between 6-72 hours.

  • Results from treatment can often be noted about 4-5 weeks after your last treatment depending on your metabolism and body type.
  • Evidence of milk skin retraction may begin to appear at 10-14 days post-injection. This improvement
may be more evident in a photograph than in your own estimation.
